There's never going to come a day when the suit dies out. It is the quintessential piece in the men's world and from what I've heard, "it's like lingerie for men". But that doesn't mean that it can't take a back seat to something else for a couple months, and that is exactly what the fall/winter has in store for us.
Separates will be a key style next season, and fashion educated men should rejoice at the opportunity to mix and match colors, fabrics, and patterns. For the less educated, it may at first be uncomfortable to have so many options. Fret not, you should look at it as another level of layering as the variety will create texture within your outfit, giving it some friction for the eye to hold to.
Now, just because I say separates doesn't mean you need to stick exclusively with suit pants and sport coats. Embrace your adventurous side and couple leather jackets with jeans or jean jackets with cargo's (as long as they're slim fit). Just a rule of thumb for any non-suit combinations is to make sure that the fabrics or colors aren't too closely matching; don't want to appear like you're trying to intentionally match them.
